Vietnam is the easternmost nation on the Indochina Peninsula. With a population of over 85 million, Vietnam is the 13th most populous country in the world and the most densely populated nation in Southeast Asia.

Life expectancy: 68 years (male) 73 years (female)

Population below national poverty line: 19.5% (2004 est.)

GDP: $258.6 billion (2006 est.)

GDP per capita: $3,100 (2006 est.)

Religion: Buddhist 9.3%, Catholic 6.7%, Hoa Hao 1.5%, Cao Dai 1.1%, Protestant 0.5%, Muslim 0.1%, none 80.8% (1999 census)

Languages: Vietnamese (official), English (increasingly favoured as a second language), some French, Chinese, and Khmer; mountain area languages (Mon-Khmer and Malayo-Polynesian)

Climate: tropical in south; monsoonal in north with hot, rainy season (May to September) and warm, dry season (October to March)

Vietnam is a densely-populated, developing country that in the last 30 years has had to recover from the ravages of war. Substantial progress was achieved from 1986 to 1997 in moving forward from an extremely low level of development and significantly reducing poverty

Bóthar in Vietnam

Bóthar began working in Vietnam in 2004. Families that participate in the Bóthar projects are provided with training, cattle, farming, veterinary, office and farming equipment.

VIETNAM

Project Title: Integrated Agriculture, Household Income Increase and Micro-Credit Project

Location: Two provinces in the Mekong Delta

Number of families: 240 families in 6 villages

Animals: 240 heifers, 240 beef cattle, 12 breeding bulls

Other inputs: equipment and supplies, transportation, micro-credits, construction materials

Training: in agro-ecology practices, e.g. animal and food production

Brief synopsis: Improving livestock, crop and food production by micro-credits (for vegetable gardening), provision of animals and training

Pass-on obligation: within 3 years one animal will be passed on, as well as the amount corresponding to the original cattle price

Expected benefits: To increase the income by 80% of the project families by 50% within 3 years; to improve cattle and crop production by 30% within 3 years

Other relevant data: paradoxically the region is considered as the most important agricultural and the poorest region at one time due to the lack of technical assistance
