Languages: Ukrainian (official) 67%, Russian 24%, other 9% (includes small Romanian-, Polish-, and Hungarian-speaking minorities)

Climate: Winters vary from cool along the Black Sea to cold farther inland; summers are warm across the greater part of the country, hot in the south

In 1986 there was an accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power station, about 8% of Ukraine's territory was contaminated as were large areas in neighbouring Belarus. Millions have suffered as a result.

Bóthar in the Ukraine: Bóthar began working in the Ukraine in 2007 and helps families with training, support and to establish pig based farming projects.

UKRAINE

Helping farmer families of 'Prydunavia' Farmers Association to improve swine breeding and production

Location: Prydunavia Izmail Area, Odessa Oblast, Ukraine.

Total number of families to be assisted over the entire course of the project: 27 families and 1 orphanage

Animals: 3 families in each village will receive 3 gilts (young sows) each. Each village will receive a boar also

Other inputs: A water boiler for Utkonosivka Orphanage, freezing chamber for storing meat, working overalls for children

Training: Project implementation, financial and project reporting, gender issues.

Brief synopsis of the project: 27 farmer families and one orphanage will receive 3 gilts and a 1 boar per village. The project will ensure long term food security. Unemployment is high in the area and pig farming will help generate an income also

Pass-on obligations: 28 families will receive three 10 month old gilts from the original families.

Expected benefits: Increased incomes, improved nutrition in families and in the orphanage, improved swine productivity
