The Philippines is an island nation located in Southeast Asia. More than 7,000 islands make up the Philippines, but the bulk of its fast-growing population lives on just 11 of them.

Religion: Roman Catholic 80.9%, Evangelical 2.8%, Iglesia ni Kristo 2.3%, Aglipayan 2%, other Christian 4.5%, Muslim 5%, other 1.8%, unspecified 0.6%, none 0.1% (2000 census)

Languages: two official languages - Filipino (based on Tagalog) and English; eight major dialects - Tagalog, Cebuano, Ilocano, Hiligaynon or Ilonggo, Bicol, Waray, Pampango, and Pangasinan

Climate: tropical marine; northeast monsoon (November to April); southwest monsoon (May to October)

Much of the country is mountainous and prone to earthquakes and eruptions from around 20 active volcanoes. It is often buffeted by typhoons and other storms.

Though it once boasted one of the region's best-performing economies, the Philippines is saddled with a large national debt and tens of millions of people live in poverty.

Bóthar in The Philippines

Bóthar began working in the Philippines in 2005. Bóthar provides families in the Philippines with training, water buffalo, cattle, goats, pigs and poultry. Bóthar also provides farming materials.

PHILIPPINES

Project title: Community-based Holistic Development for Marginalised Families

Location: The islands of Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao

Number of Families: 375

Animals: 100 water buffalos, 100 cattle, 500 goats, 75 pigs, 3500 heads of poultry

Other inputs: seeds, planting materials, tools

Training: on organic food garden, integrated livestock and cropping, animal production and management

Brief synopsis: the project targets tribal and indigenous people, upland dwellers and poor marginal farmers within a holistic approach

Pass-on obligations: cattle or buffaloes within 8 months, the first and third kid-goat after 6 months, two heads of poultry within a year

Expected benefits: 60% of participating groups will have developed capacity for organizational sustainability and scaling up of projects, 75% adapt sustainable agricultural practices, 90% improve their food production, 80% increase income by at least 35% annually

Local partners: PROCESS Foundation in the Visayas, Provincial Government of Kalinga in Luzon, the Provincial of Agusan del Sur in Mindanao
