Project Title: Livestock for Orphans in Orhei

Location: Cazanesti, Orhei County, Eastern Moldova

Total number of families: 262 orphaned and abandoned children are resident in the orphanage

Animals: 6 dairy cows and 12 rabbits were originally placed in the orphanage in 2003

Training: Vocational agriculture and livestock breeding training

Brief synopsis of the project: In the gymnasium orphanage of Orhei, the provision of cows and rabbits are essential in the improvement of the orphans nutrition levels and life conditions. The disadvantaged youth also benefit from learning about animal husbandry which will be of great use in the future.

Pass-on obligations: Once stock levels in Orhei are at an optimum level, both cows and rabbits will be passed onto other special schools and orphanages in the region.

Expected benefits: Nutrition levels of orphans will increase plus the attainment of a skill (animal husbandry) for the future

Co-financing partners: Bóthar has covered this in conjunction with Electric Aid (Electricity Supply Board Foundation)

Local partners: Heifer International Romania
