Bóthar Study Tour to Mwera Village, Malawi

Peter Murphy from Navan, Co Meath recently attended the Bóthar study tour to Malawi. On his return he wrote the following article about his experience on the tour.

On October 14th last I was part of a group who visited Malawi on a field trip. I must say that the trip was most enjoyable and enlightening. The most enjoyable aspects of the trip were the visit to the organic farm where a superb irrigation system and reservoirs which were constructed by hand have transformed 60 acres of waste land.

The trip to Mwera Village, with Bóthar heifers on the surrounding farms was an amazing sight. The creamery (built by Bóthar) is in full production and was making strawberry yogurt on the day we visited.

I must say that I was amazed at the discipline and respect the 640 children in the local school had for their four teachers and it was a privilege for us to present the three sets of jerseys and footballs to the schools.  On Sunday the 30th of October, teams wearing Laois, Meath & Simonstown Gaels jerseys, met in a tournament at Mwera Hill and they tore strips out of each other. (Nothing changes even in Africa)

In Navan we have formed a committee called friends of Bóthar and its aims are to support the local schools with basic equipment and to help Bóthar in any future infrastructure projects approved by Bóthar. All funds collected will be channeled through Bóthar.

I commend Bóthar for excellent work they have carried out and I recommend Bóthar supporters to apply for a field trip especially young people.
