Summer 2005: WannaBee Fundraiser

Beard of 500,000 bees to make world record and raise funds for Bóthar

Bóthar and the U.K. based charity; Bees for Development Trust are actively involved in providing beekeeping programmes and advice to poor families throughout the Developing World. As little as 3 colonies of honeybees can completely change the lives of a struggling family through the improvement in nutritional intake or the sale of honey and beeswax. The pollinatory activity of the bees can improve local fruit and vegetable crop yields helping to boost whole communities.

As charities, Bóthar and Bees for Development Trust need constant sources of funding in order to continue and expand their beekeeping work overseas. Through a unique world record attempt both organisations have been given an opportunity to raise much needed funds. On June 25th 2005, Philip McCabe, President of the Federation of Irish Beekeeping Associations, will attempt to wear a beard of 500,000 bees in an effort to enter the Guinness Book of World Records. This opportunity has been created to mark the fact that Apimondia 2005 (World Beekeeping Congress) is taking place in Ireland (RDS, Dublin) this August.

If you would like to become involved in this particular venture and help raise funds; information packs and sponsorship cards are available from our Fundraising Projects Office – 071 9120100.
