Summer 2005: New projects in Nepal
Nepal is a small country in central Asia with a population of 26 million people. It is one of the poorest and least developed countries in the world with almost 50% of the population living below the poverty line. People are also struggling due to the civil unrest involving Maoist rebels.

Agriculture provides a livelihood for over 80% of the population. Bóthar has teamed up with a local NGO – AHTCS (Animal Health Training and Consultancy Service) who are trying to improve the living standards of rural communities through animal aid.

There are two projects currently operating in Nepal that are working with women's groups in the areas of Valam, Lamachour, Bharatpokhari and Armala Village Development Committee situated at Kaski district in Nepal.

The animals being used in these project areas are goats, buffaloes, cows and poultry. Each of these animals is extremely beneficial to the project farmers. Goats, Buffaloes and cows provide nutritious milk, which improves the families' diet and any surplus, can be sold. Buffalo also provide draft power for farmers. Poultry provides eggs and meat, which help a family to greatly improve their diet.

Even though the project is still only in its early stages, families are already beginning to see and feel the benefits from the improvement in their diet.
