Autumn 2004 : Bóthar working with Romanian Orphans

Together with our US partners Heifer International and with local Romanian organisations Bóthar is helping to provide nutrition for children in five hospitals, 10 orphanages and 2 residential schools for the mentally handicapped, all situated in Cluj County in the North West of Romania. The project aims to provide meat and milk for poor, sick and mentally handicapped children in the region.

The project has three objectives:
1) Provide nutrition to hospitalised children and vulnerable youth through the distribution of meat, milk and eggs from participating farmers.

2) Generate an income for poor farming families in rural areas by providing them with food and income producing livestock.

3) Involve youth of the project in animal health training and farming techniques

Within two years 85 poor families will each receive 2 quality dairy cows.As well as passing on the gift of the first born female calf to another poor family, each recipient farmer will provide milk, eggs, dairy products and meat to the children of the orphanages and hospitals. This wonderful project is an example of the practical and highly effective work Bóthar does in our fight to eradicate poverty and hunger.
