Autumn 2004 : Radio Station listeners raise €2,500 in two days!
Séan Buckley of Radio Limerick One and his listeners raised enough money to fly 10 pigs to 10 poor families in Malawi, Africa, during the recent Bóthar 'Pigs Can Fly' fundraising campaign.
Séan, who's show is called "Late and Live" on 104/105.5fm, initially hoped to raise enough money to send one pig to Malawi but interest from his listeners was so great that his efforts began to take on a life of their own. Séan began by explaining the work that Bóthar does to his listeners and asking them for their help. The response was phenomenal with the phones hopping off the hook with people wanting to pledge some money.
"The support was huge, we had enough for 6 pigs on Thursday but far exceeded that again on Friday with enough money being raised to send 10"says Séan. Bóthar was delighted to see such support. Séan and his listeners raised a total of e2500 in just two days!
The money raised by Séan and his listeners will be used to train and prepare 10 families to receive an Irish pig; fly the pig to Africa; and to provide full veterinary back-up for years to come. But, most importantly, it is not just one poor family that will benefit from the Limerick listeners' generosity. Each recipient family must pass-on the firstborn female of their pig to another poor family that has been trained to care for it. In this way the gifts given by the Limerick listeners will keep on growing in farming projects in Malawi.
Séan's show, 'Late and Live' is on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from 10pm to 12pm on Radio Limerick One, 104-105.5fm Many thanks to Séan and his listeners at Radio Limerick One for their support.
