"This is a great opportunity for our junior listeners - members of the Lyric Breakfast Club - AND their families to provide long lasting support for those less fortunate"

RTÉ lyric fm Supporting Bóthar

Are you tired of all that talk on the radio?  Are you looking for a relaxing spot on the dial each morning to ease you into your day?  Then tune to RTÉ lyric fm, 96-99fm, any weekday morning between 7.00am and 10.00am and you’ll more than likely have found what you’re looking for.  Hi, Carl Corcoran here, presenter of The Lyric Breakfast.  Each morning I have the great pleasure of playing a mix of music that spans not only centuries, but also genres and styles.  Lyric is Ireland’s music and arts station and although our core repertoire is classical music, our playlist also includes jazz, traditional Irish, music from the movies and musicals, opera, contemporary and world music to name just a few, with programmes throughout the schedule specialising in each one.  On Breakfast our playlist includes classical favourites with a few ‘twists and turns’ – a unique way to start your day!

Since taking up the position of Breakfast presenter 2½ years ago, I’ve seen our audience grow and grow.  Each morning we receive texts and e-mails from listeners around the country and even around the world telling us how we ‘hit the spot’ for them.  That’s so rewarding!  We offer a “talk free zone” for a wide range of listeners - those at home, those on the move and those at work. Ever notice how many businesses now play lyric on their phones, on the speakers in shops, in the doctor and dentist waiting rooms?  So often we hear about families tuned in over breakfast in the home.  It’s all about the music. Just in case you might miss your fix of news and sport, we do broadcast an hourly news bulletin at half past each hour, there’s a short sports update, and the all-important traffic update from AA Roadwatch  every half hour or so for those of you who are doing battle with the commuter traffic.  So, you’re never out of touch and yet you’ll never feel “bombarded” by TALK TALK TALK and NEWS NEWS NEWS.

From time to time, there are also opportunities to win great competition prizes.  A recent competition for a trip to Prague for two gave us a huge response. We also cater for our junior listeners on Wednesdays with our Lyric Breakfast Club where we send greetings to our members.  Each child also receives a monthly Newsletter full of fun and educational things to do, and always with the intention of introducing and maintaining kids’ interest in the greatest music in the world.  The response to this initiative has been huge with children, parents and teachers alike showing a great interest in the activities.

I personally came to classical radio in a very circuitous manner.  In the 70’s I enjoyed success here in Ireland and abroad as a young singer songwriter, with the given nom de-plume of Jamie Stone. The next 20 years were spent in the U.S experiencing all aspects of the music business, until 1998 when I returned to my native Dublin. Work with RTÉ Radio 1 and a weekend slot on the then new lyric fm finally led to my current position of daily broadcaster.  I’m not a classical music expert by any means, but I love GOOD music and have an empathy with all of the music that’s played on the Lyric Breakfast…try it and you’ll see what I mean.  Once you’ve tried it, I’m sure you’ll be back for more and you may find yourself tuning into many of our other great programmes.

You can tune into the Lyric Breakfast for regular updates
