Bóthar's bee training programme

Can I tell you about Violet, her husband Turyamureba and their six children who live in Hamurwa in Uganda? For years Violet and her family have lived in a level of poverty that is difficult for you and I to understand.

Bee My HoneyNo sanitation, no education, no prospect of change.

With no employment available, Violet’s family were the same as most of the poor in today’s world. They relied on the small plot of land on which they lived to feed them.

They survived from day-to-day on the food that they could grow or catch and what they could barter for at a daily local market.

Illness is often deadly when you are poor. Without money for vaccines treatable diseases can be deadly. You have little diversity in your diet so nutrition is a huge challenge, with protein being one of the most difficult foods to source.

Violet was determined that her children would have a better future than she and her husband so she worked to change things for them.

One day at market, where news more than anything is traded, Violet heard about a woman who was using unusual beehives and strange equipment with great success.

Violet joined the Bóthar training programme and immediately started preparing to receive a gift of three contemporary bee hives together with training and equipment from Bóthar in 2004.

Four years on and Violet’s life has dramatically improved!

Violet received training in the modern methods of keeping bees, the management of an apiary and environmental protection through the planting of trees and crops. Her family’s health has improved because of the availability of honey and income from the sale of honey.

‘the bees give me sweet medicinal honey that I can sell to my neighbours’

Violet was able to pass on the gift of bee-hives to her neighbour, ensuring the cycle of assistance and change will continue in her village as her neighbour also passes-on . . . Most importantly, Violet has been able to pay school fees for her children and make a difference in their future.

It was thanks to a donor like you that Bóthar was able to assist Violet’s family and their lives were completely changed.

Today I am asking you to help us make that change again . . .

Bóthar urgently needs funds to assist many of Violet’s neighbours in their struggle to become self-sufficient, bee-keeping farmers.
